Add Art, History and Culture to a Date in East London

East London has more than its share of small museums and art galleries that are well worth a visit and would make a great venue for an afternoon date. Read on for more about some of the fascinating collections and exhibitions.

The famous Whitechapel Gallery, just near Whitechapel tube station, is a world leader in contemporary art and has been exhibiting modern masters since the early twentieth century. The beautiful gallery building has recently been expanded to double its original size but the place remains as visitor-friendly as ever.

If you’re interested in engineering history, don’t miss the Whitechapel Bell Foundry or (one of our favourites) the Tower Bridge Experience where you can explore the walkways, towers and engine rooms of the bridge.

Feel like a child again and see a great collection of children’s toys through the ages when you visit the Victoria and Albert Museum’s eastern satellite, the Museum of Childhood at Bethnal Green.

Several east London museums feature furniture or domestic life: get a snapshot of life as it was in a Huguenot silk weaver’s household at Dennis Severs’ House in Spitalfields, or see English furniture from the last 500 years arranged in period rooms at the Geffrye Museum, Bethnal Green.

Further east at Walthamstow is the William Morris Gallery, displaying examples of fabrics, carpets and furniture to give a glimpse into the life and work of William Morris and other followers of the Arts and Crafts Movement that flourished in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Each of these museums and galleries is on a small scale, can be visited in a couple of hours, and provides a unique perspective on life and art that can’t fail to intrigue. Impress your date with something a little
