Romantic Dating - Walks Around the Square Mile

If you’re looking for a chance to talk to your date and get some gentle exercise at the same time, explore the City of London on foot. Between Monday and Friday the Square Mile as it’s known is thronged with busy people, but on weekends it’s a more tranquil place, very different from the frantic weekday atmosphere of the financial district. Here are a few highlights of the City:

  • Start your walk at Chancery Lane tube station and head east. Close to the Smithfield Market are St Bartholomews Hospital church of St Bartholomew the Great, ancient buildings which contrast with the stark modern architecture of the Barbican Estate towers nearby.
  • There are some surviving remnants of the old London Wall, near the Museum of London, by St Alphage Church, and just outside the present-day City boundary near the Tower of London. Also look out for the statues of dragons dotted around the edges of the City to mark its boundaries.
  • From the Bishopsgate area around Liverpool Street Station, head south towards the river. You might want to divert slightly to take in the St Mary Woolnoth, an elegant church and the only Hawksmoor church within the City boundaries.
  • When you reach the river, finish your tour of the City with a stroll westward along the Embankment.

Taken at a leisurely pace, a walking date around the boundaries of the Square Mile will take a couple of hours to complete and can be quite romantic - you and your date will have had a chance to get to know each other while visiting a range of interesting spots that can be easily missed in the weekday City bustle.
