What to Talk About on a First Date

If you're about to head off on your first date with someone you've meet on Antipodate, chances are that you already know a little bit about them. If you can, use this information to help steer the conversation, as doing so will show that you're interested in your date and want to take the time to get to know them better.

  • Where are they from? If your date is a newly arrived Aussie, Saffa or Kiwi, ask them about their hometown and how it compares with their current city.
  • Why are they here? If your date is an expat, then no doubt they have an interesting story to tell about how they ended up in Britain. Their visit could be related to work or study or a simple desire to see the world.
  • What's their family background? Many people enjoy talking about their family and their background, and doing so can be a humorous ice-breaker. Many Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans have a UK ancestry they won’t mind talking about. However, avoid topics such as divorce and the like if they crop up.
  • What are their hobbies and passions? Many people enjoy talking about their hobbies and their goals, and will happily respond to any questions about an area that interests them. However, try to keep these questions open and natural so that you don't feel like you're grilling them.

Read through your date’s profile once more just before your first date. Make a mental note of things you can ask them about to get the conversation started and hopefully, that first date awkwardness will disappear quickly!
