Economy changing attitudes towards dating

Both men and women are adjusting their ideas of what dating should be in light of the financial environment.

With many people out of work, hoards of potential partners are no longer expecting to be treated to an expensive night out and are settling for a far more modest outing.

Whilst online dating has been boosted as it's seen as an affordable way to meet people and get to know them first online without spending a fortune on dinner dates, perceptions of what makes an ideal mate are changing too.

Both males and females are relaxing their ideas about a potential partner's job status and earning ability, according to The Modesto Bee.

Joel Koosed, director of a San Francisco Bay Area-based meet-up group, told the newspaper, “So many people are out of work and underemployed and having financial problems. For many people, I think (unemployment) would no longer be a deal-breaker. What I am looking for in a first date, and what most women are looking for, is generosity of spirit,” he added.

Dating expert and contributing writer for 'Dating for Dummies,' April Braswell, agreed with Koosed, saying that, so long as a potential partner shows that they have the motivation to go out and get a job, it doesn't matter so much if they don't have one.

“They want to see and they want to hear about things you are doing and how you are taking action to get a job," Braswell said.
